Magpie (Abraxas grossulariata)

This genus of geometrid moths are small to medium sized, usually 30–50 mm wingspan, though some species are smaller. Their wings are broad and rounded, and typically white or pale yellow base with bold black, brown, or orange markings in spots, bands, or blotches. The elongated larvae are often brownish or green with mottled patterns that provide camouflage, and have a looping locomotion due to reduced prolegs. They feed on a wide range of trees and shrubs (deciduous and evergreen). The adults are mainly nocturnal, but some species also fly by day. The wing patterns are cryptic when resting on patterned surfaces, though their coloration can also function as a warning (aposematism) against predators, and some species may accumulate toxins from host plants, making them unpalatable.
