The Erebidae are one of the largest and most diverse families of moths (Lepidoptera) with 11,000 species worldwide. The family includes the tiger moths (or tigers), footmen, lichen moths and wasp moths, of which many are familiar and ecologically important species. Previously they were grouped under Noctuidae, but taxonomic revisions have recognized them as a separate family. The species range from very small to quite large. Most have stout bodies and diverse wing shapes. They tend to be drab, cryptically patterned species (bark- or leaf-mimicking) as well as brightly coloured and boldly patterned moths such as the tiger moths. The adult moths are typically strong fliers.
