Mottled Beauty (Alcis repandata)

Alcis is a genus of moths in the Geometridae family. These are medium sized moths, typically with broad, rounded wings. The wing colour usually ranges from brownish-gray to dark gray, with intricate wavy lines, crossbands, and spots that give them a bark or lichen-like appearance when resting on bark during the day, and blending seamlessly with their surroundings giving excellent camouflage when resting on tree trunks or rocks. Males often have more strongly bipectinate (feathered) antennae than females, used for detecting pheromones. The caterpillars feed on a wide range of trees and shrubs, especially deciduous species such as oaks (Quercus), birches (Betula), willows (Salix), and maples (Acer).
