Larentiinae
Primary tabs

Larentiinae is a subfamily of small to medium-sized moths (wingspan 15–35 mm) in the Geometridae family. This is a large and diverse subfamily of moths, that are notable for their high species richness, especially in cooler and mountainous regions, and are among the most conspicuous and well-studied of the geometrid moths. They are particularly diverse and abundant in temperate and boreal regions, and at high elevations in the tropics. The forewings are often angled or notched, unlike the more rounded wings of Sterrhinae. Colouration is usually dark, with bold contrasting patterns: browns, greys, blacks, often with white, orange, or reddish bands. The wings often show strongly toothed or jagged cross-lines. The caterpillars often have camouflage colouration (brown, green, or mottled) to blend with twigs or foliage. Many species feed on herbaceous plants, in contrast to other subfamilies that may prefer woody hosts.
