Herminiinae
Primary tabs

Commonly called litter moths because their larvae feed on dead leaves and detritus in the forest floor. This subfamily are often overlooked but play an important role in decomposition and nutrient cycling. They are small to medium moths, usually with wingspans between 20–40 mm. Mostly drab browns, grays, or tans, often with wavy or speckled patterns that mimic dried leaves. The forewings are triangular or elongated; hindwings are usually paler, the resting posture is distinctive with many species holding their wings tent-like or roof-like over the body, or rolled slightly around it, resembling dead leaves or debris. The caterpillars feed mainly on detritus, decaying leaves, and sometimes fungi or green plants which helps in the breakdown of organic matter on the forest floor. Mainly cryptic which helps them blend into leaf litter. Some adult species drink nectar, but many feed on sap, decaying fruit, or not at all.
