Transfiguration (cell 6)

This fresco by Fra Angelico depicts the Transfiguration of Christ, one of the most radiant and spiritually charged scenes in the Gospel narrative. At the center, Christ stands upon a rocky elevation, enveloped in a great mandorla of divine light, his white garments gleaming with celestial brilliance. His arms are outstretched in a gesture that both recalls the form of the Cross and proclaims his divine majesty. His calm and compassionate face radiates serenity, embodying the perfect union of human and divine.

At either side of Christ appear the Old Testament prophets Moses and Elias (Elijah), who represent the Law and the Prophets bearing witness to the fulfillment of God’s promise. Below, the three apostles, Peter, James, and John, are overwhelmed by the vision. They fall to the ground, shielding their faces and raising their hands in astonishment and awe at the divine revelation. Their vivid gestures convey both fear and adoration, marking the human response to transcendent glory.

To the left stands the Virgin Mary, serene and composed, contemplating the mystery with prayerful devotion. She is often included in Fra Angelico’s frescoes as a symbol of perfect faith and contemplation. On the right, in the celestial realm is St. Dominic shown in adoration. His inclusion links the scene to the meditative spirituality of the Dominican Order, for whom these frescoes were created.

Through delicate color, gentle modeling, and a composition that ascends from the kneeling apostles to the radiant Christ, Fra Angelico transforms this biblical episode into a vision of divine illumination, where heaven and earth meet in harmony.
