The Cathedral of Monreale

Built in the reign of King William II of Sicily, between 1153-1189, the cathedral of Monreale is one of the last great architectural works of the Norman kings of Sicily.
The walls of the cathedral are covered with mosaics created between1190 - 1260 in the Byzantine style by Arabic craftsmen. The mosaics tell the creation story, the story of the patriachs, the life and works of Christ, and the life of St Peter and St Paul. The central apse contains a Christ Pantocrat, below which is a Madonna and child flanked by archangels and apostles.
