The upper floor of the San Marco Monastery contains the monk cells, which were mostly painted by Fra Angelico. Each of the novice cells has a crucifixion scene with St Dominic praying at the foot of the cross, each of his poses illustrate a particular form of Dominican pray. The cells for the fathers each have a scene from the Life of Christ.
The frescoes are devotional and were created so that the monk in the cell might contemplate the particular event in the life of Christ and designed to emphase the Dominican Order's focus on prayer, study, and penance.
