The Xyleninae are a subfamily of moths within the family Noctuidae, commonly referred to as wood moths or sometimes arrow-shaped moths. They are a diverse group, mainly associated with temperate forests, and are notable for their seasonal and ecological specialization. They are a moderately large subfamily with numerous genera and species, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere. These are medium-sized moths with cryptically coloured forewings, often brown, gray, or reddish, blending with bark or dead leaves, the wing patterns may include lines, spots, or arrow-like shapes, sometimes with pale or dark streaks along the forewings. The hindwings are generally pale or lightly shaded, and less conspicuous than forewings. Caterpillars are often folivorous, feeding on trees and shrubs such as oak, birch, poplar, and other deciduous plants. They are typically smooth-bodied, green or brown, and cryptically coluored to match foliage or twigs. Many species overwinter as larvae, pupae, or even eggs, depending on the genus.
