Aedia
Primary tabs

Aedia is a genus of Noctuidae moths in the subfamily Aediinae. Moths of this genus are medium-sized, often with cryptic forewings that blend into bark or foliage, while the hindwings tend to have contrasting colors or patterns (sometimes with orange, red, or white patches). This contrast is thought to function as a startle or flash defense against predators. The forewings are usually narrow, with wavy or mottled patterns in shades of gray, brown, or black. Hindwings often have bold markings that become visible in flight. The body of these moths is slender with relatively long legs, suited for resting in cryptic postures on bark or leaves. Caterpillars of Aedia species often feed on Convolvulaceae (morning glories, bindweeds). They tend to be smooth-bodied, sometimes with subtle markings that help them blend with host plants.
