Herald (Scoliopteryx libatrix)

Scoliopteryx is a genus of moths in the Erebidae family. Medium-sized moths, with S. libatrix reaching about 40–45 mm wingspan. Their forewings are highly distinctive—angled, scalloped, and often appearing jagged, resembling a dead leaf when at rest. Typically orange-brown to reddish, with silver or white patches and darker mottling. This disruptive pattern enhances camouflage on bark and dead foliage. They are relatively robust moths, with wings held roof-like over the body when resting. Caterpillars feed mainly on willows (Salix) and poplars (Populus), occasionally on other related trees. They are smooth-bodied, greenish with fine lines, and blend in well with leaves. The adults are unusual in that they hibernate through the winter in sheltered places such as caves, cellars, barns, and hollow trees, emerging in early spring to breed.
