Bishop James Johnson

This bust of Bishop of Worcester James Johnson (d1774), is by Joseph Nollekens.

Due to his connections with Lord Mansfield, Andrew Stone and his brother George Stone (Primate of Ireland), James Johnson was made chaplain to George II in 1723 and travelled with the king to Hanover. In 1752 he was made Bishop of Gloucester, and made Bishop of Worcester in 1759.

He died in Bath in 1774 when he fell off his horse and was crushed by the wheels of a wagon. He was buried in the family vault at Lacock and this memorial by Joseph Nollekens was commissioned by his sister Sarah Johnson.
