Francesco Algarotti

 

This tomb dedicated to Francesco Algarotti (d1764), in the Camposanto Monumentale, Pisa, was designed by Mauro Antonio Tesi. It was erected on the instructions of Frederick the Great of Prussia.1

 

Francesco Algarotti was an Italian poet, mathematician, philosopher, and art critic. He first studied at the University of Bologna, and then in Rome, Florence, Paris, and finally came to London in 1744. He became the leading exponent on the works of Isaac Newton and a member of the Royal Society.2 Francesco was a friend of Voltaire who nicknamed him the "Swan of Padua" due to is ability to glide through courts of Europe.3
