Months of the Year - January to June
Primary tabs
The left hand side of the Zodiac window at Chartres Cathedral contains the twelve months of the year. The panels here depicting January to June, were donated by count Thibault VI on behalf of Thomas of Perche.1
The central quatrefoil in this panel has an image of three faced Janus, dressed in blue, standing in a doorway behind which is a walled medieval town.
The Roman god Janus is usually shown with two faces looking into the past and the future. However in this image at Chartres he has been given three faces so that he looks into the present as well.
In this panel for February a man is sat warming his bare feet before a blazing fire, a flask of wine is on the floor by his side.
The panel for March shows a man pruning the vines.
April is a women holding flowers between two trees.
The image for May is a knight in chain mail and armour carrying a lance.
June shows a man mowing a field with a scythe. His red tunic is tied with a green belt over white trousers.
