Revenge of Herodias

 

Gothic sculpture developed from the Romanesque in the mid 12th century (c1145) France, and continued through to the late 15th century and in some places through to the mid 16th century.

 

The period is characterized by the early simplicity of naturalistic figures to the late excessively enriched elegance and elaborate clothing of the figures in the later period. The subject matter was that of the mysticism of the mid to late medieval age. The main theme being the life of Christ from the nativity through to the Passion, with emphasis on suffering and emotion.
