King John of England dies at Newark Castle on the 19th of October 1216. In September 1216 John had renewed his defence against the Barons in what was to become known as the First Baron's War. He had travelled north to relieve Lincoln and then east to King's Lynn where he contracted dysentery. He then moved back west and his illness grew worse by the time that he reached Newark where he died. John was buried at Worcester Cathedral as he had commended his soul to God and his body to Saint Wulstan.1
