Located on either side of the Portail des Libraires at Rouen Cathedral, these quatrefoil sculptures of Adma nd Eve and their expulsion from Eden were created between 1278-1300.

In the first image above God shows Adam and Eve around Eden, and instructs them that it is forbidden to eat the fruit from either the Tree of Life or the Tree of Knowledge.

However Eve is tempted by a serpent to eat the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge and she convinces Adam to eat the fruit with her.

Having eat the fruit the two become aware of their nakedness and hide. This alerts God to the fact that they have eaten the fruit. As a result God rebukes them for having disobeyed his command.

And they are expelled from the garden of Eden. An angel with a flaming sword stands guard at the entrance barring their return.

God provides them with tools and clothes so that they can survive outside of Eden.

Adam becomes a farmer growing crops and Eve spins wool to make clothes.
