Worldwide there are over 1,300 species of Andrena bees of which about 60 species can be found in the UK. Andrena species are all solitary making there nests in light sandy soil, by excavating small volcano shaped mounds of soil and are commonly called mining bees as a result. Though solitary one may find many nests in the same location giving the impression of a community.
