The genus Bombus contains the commonly named Bumblebees. These are social insects that construct their nests underground, or in the case of the Carder bees in leaf litter beneath hedges.

The Snakeflies (Raphidioptera) are a family of insects that are listed amongst the sub-order Megaloptera. These insects are predatory in both the larvae and adult stages, and are completely terrestrial, and the female has a large ovipositor with which she places her eggs under loose bark.

Kings and Prophets

On either side of the central window in the chancel of Tewkesbury abbey are four windows of five lights. Each window has a central figure that represents one of the kings from the Old Testament and lights on either side contain images depicting a prophet. These windows are dated from 1338-1340.

Bishop of Worcester 1218-1236. The effigy on the tomb is in the Romanesque style and lacks the detailed modelling that would become the hallmark of Gothic sculpture.

 

Bishop Walter de Cantelupe. Worcester Cathedral

This mid 13th century tomb of Bishop Walter de Cantelupe (d1266) is made of Purbeck marble. The relief of the effigy is more rounded than that of the nearby tomb of his predecessor the bishop of Worcester William de Blois (d1236) which is still in the Romanesque style and shows the development to the more rounded forms of the early Gothic.

Joanna de Bohun - Hereford Cathedral

The tomb of Joanna Bohun (d1337), in the Lady Chapel of Hereford cathedral, is one of only two 14th cenury tombs of women in Hereford where the name of the person represented is known.

 

The Last Judgement

This medieval window in the chancel of Tewkesbury dates from 1338. The main panels depicts the Last Judgement, and the Coronation of the Virgin is the subject of the rose window.
