13th-century tombs (c. 1200–1300) are predominantly effigial monuments in Early Gothic style. Recumbent figures, often carved in Purbeck marble ⓘ, lie rigidly in prayer, expressing feudal piety, crusading identity, and hope for salvation through rank, devotion, and stone.
