Worldwide there are over 1,300 species of Andrena bees of which about 60 species can be found in the UK. Andrena species are all solitary making there nests in light sandy soil, by excavating small volcano shaped mounds of soil and are commonly called mining bees as a result.

Micrandrena is a subgenus of mining bees, with some 60 species. These are small black bees, commonly known as Pygmy mining bees.
