Since its construction in around 1150, the western portal of Chartres Cathedral, decorated with elongated late Romanesque style figures of the Kings and Queens of the Old Testament has been known as the Royal Portal.
Sculpture
This group of eleven relief panels form part of the carved vault decoration of a sacristy bay at the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud. Executed in a soft, chalky limestone typical of the Loire region, the panels combine biblical narrative scenes with hagiographic episodes from the Life of St Nicholas and include one figure of architectural patronage.

This monument by John Flaxman is to Sarah Morley (d1784) who died a few days after giving birth whilst travelling back to England from India. Both Sarah and her child were buried at sea.

Striking animal reliefs, carved around 800 CE, are among the finest surviving examples of Anglo-Saxon sculpture from the Mercian kingdom. They were originally part of the 9th-century monastery at Breedon-on-the-Hill and are now set into the walls of the later Augustinian priory church of St Mary and St Hardulph.

The Prato pulpit was commissioned by the Operai del Duomo di Prato for the exterior corner of the cathedral, specifically to display the Sacra Cintola (Holy Belt of the Virgin Mary), Prato’s most treasured relic.
