Townshend, Caroline

Caroline Charlotte Townshend (1878-1944) was the daughter of the Suffragette Emily Townshend. She created the Fabian window from a design by George Bernard Shaw in 1910. After the first world war she set up home with her partner Joan Howson.

This Tree of Jesse window by Kempe and Tower in the Lady Chapel at Higham Ferrers. It is undated but is judging by the company logo of a black tower superimposed on the wheatsheaf, it is must be after Kempe's death in 1907.

War Memorial Window - Bugbrooke, Northamptonshire

This two-light window, installed shortly after the First World War (1919–1920), commemorates the men of the parish who died in the conflict.

A plaque beneath records:

“To the Glory of God and in memory of the gallant men of this Parish who gave their lives for King and Country in the Great War 1914–1918.”

This two-light window, dated 1905, depicts the Marriage Feast at Cana (John 2:1–11), the first miracle of Christ.


Main Lights

Left Light

Christ, robed in red, is seated at table and gestures in blessing. The composition places Him centrally within the domestic setting of the feast. His calm authority contrasts with the animated gestures of the surrounding figures.

Mary sits beside Him, attentive and composed, reinforcing her mediating role in the miracle.

William Morris Studios (Westminster)

William Morris Studios (Westminster) was an English stained-glass studio active in the first half of the twentieth century. Despite its name, it was entirely unrelated to the Arts and Crafts firm Morris & Co. founded by William Morris (1834–1896), and represents a distinct strand of commercial and ecclesiastical glazing in England.

North transept rose window and lower gallery window by Max Ingrand to replace the 16th century works by Jean and Nicolas Le Prince that were destroyed during the second world war.
