During the First Baron's War the crown of England is offered by the rebel barons to Prince Philip (Philip II) of France. On the 21st of May 1216 Philip lands with an army at Thanet in Kent, and marches on London, where the barons proclaim him king. By the time of John's death, in November, Philip and the barons control more than half of the country.1
