Pope Urban IV died at Perugia on the 2nd of October 1264, and was succeeded by Pope Clement IV. Two weeks before he was elected pope in 1261, Michael VIII Palaiologos had retaken Constantinople, lost during the 4th crusade, and in so doing re-established the Byzantine empire. Urban IV spent most of his papacy attempting to raise a crusade against the Byzantines but to no avail.

In his final year as pope he instituted the festival of Corpus Christi ("the Body of Christ").
