Holy Roman Emperor Henry V marries Matilda 1114

On the 7th of January 1114 the Holy Roman Emperor Henery V married Matilda the eleven year old daughter of Henry I of England in the city of Worms.

 

The marriage was a strategic alliance between the Holy Roman Empire and the Anglo-Norman kingdom of England, and strengthened ties with Western European powers as Henry V faced internal and external opposition, particularly from the papacy over the Investiture Controversy.1

 

Matilda, herself, became a central political figure later in English history during the Anarchy, a civil war over succession after her father's death.
