The archangel St. Michael, is the principal angel and field commander of the Army of God. His name is the war-cry of the good angels in the battle fought in heaven against Satan and his followers. He is often depicted triumphant over the enemy.

In this wall painting in the C15 chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Miracles at St. Aignan, St. Michael is thrusting his sword into the devil's mouth, whilst Adam and Eve clutching St. Michael's knees are being saved.

Other representations of St Michael show him weighing the souls at the Last Judgement. As sin is supposed to weigh heavy those souls that fail the test are destined for hell.
