Painted Clock - Raunds, Northamptonshire

Above the west door at St. Peter's church Raunds, Northamptonshire, is this painted clock face c1390-1430. The inscriptions asks for prayers for the souls of donors of the painting, local landowners John and Sarah Catlyn.

Two angels flank the clock and the donors kneel behind them. The star motifs were picked out in silver foil, the halos of the angels and the rays of the sun in glod leaf. The clcok face was painted using small amounts of Lapis Lazuli from Afghanistan.

The clock marked the passing of time and a reminder of ones mortality and the Last Judgment.
