Annunciation and Visitation panels - Tours Cathedral
Submitted by walwyn
These two adjacent panels form part of the mid-13th-century Childhood of Christ window in the apse of Tours Cathedral. The left scene shows the Annunciation: the Angel Gabriel approaches the Virgin with a raised hand of greeting, while Mary stands in quiet receptivity, holding a book of devotion. On the right is the Visitation, depicting Mary’s meeting with her cousin Elizabeth, the two women embracing as Elizabeth recognises the child Mary bears.
The window is characteristic of the mature Gothic glazing of Tours, with its brilliantly saturated reds and blues, crisp black-line drawing, and patterned architectural framing. The figures, slender and rhythmic, stand against luminous fields that heighten the narrative clarity. Despite later repairs to certain leads and borders, the panels preserve the grace and directness of 13th-century French stained glass, and form an important part of the cathedral’s extensive Marian iconographic cycle.
