This column capital dating from the early 12th century depicts the Annunciation and can be found in the apse of the Basilica of Notre-Dame du Port in Clermont Ferrand.

The Archangel Gabriel is to the left and holds a staff or scepter, symbolizing his role as a divine messenger. The Virgin Mary, shown seated or enthroned, wearing a crown or halo, and receiving Gabriel’s message. Her gesture is a traditional sign of humility and acceptance. The architectural structure surrounding Mary represents the house of Mary which is reminiscent of later Rennaisance paintings where she is shown in a loggia.
