Risen Christ - Byfield, Northamptonshire

A richly coloured memorial window by Charles Eamer Kempe fills the east wall of the south chapel.
-
Centre light: The Risen Christ, crowned and bearing the banner of the Resurrection, stands in triumph. Below, St Anne with the Virgin emphasises lineage and devotion, anchoring the Resurrection theme in holy kinship.
-
Left-hand light: St Thomas ⓘ, holding a spear, identified by his traditional attribute.
-
Right-hand light: St George, the soldier-saint, likewise armed, balancing the composition with martial sanctity.
The selection of saints deliberately mirrors the names of the dedicatees, a typical and thoughtful Kempe conceit that binds iconography to personal memorial.
An inscription along the base reads:
“Remember ye in the Lord the Revd Thomas Farebrother who died July 30th 1896 aged 89. Also Mary Anne Farebrother who died June 1st 1884 aged 68. Also George Farebrother who died January 22nd 1892 aged 83.”
Stylistically, the window displays Kempe’s hallmark late-Victorian manner: cool blues and jewelled whites, firm drawing, and delicately patterned canopies and quarries framing the figures, all unified by a clear devotional programme centred on Resurrection hope and familial remembrance.
