Good Shepherd - Tiffield Northamptonshire

This three-light stained-glass window of 1873, made by Jones & Willis, is located in the church at Tiffield. The composition centres upon Christ as the Good Shepherd, framed by richly ornamented geometric glazing.
In the central light, Christ stands holding the shepherd’s crook, a lamb resting upon his shoulders and sheep gathered at his feet. The image draws upon the Johannine declaration, “I am the good shepherd”, expressing pastoral care, sacrifice, and redemptive guidance. The figure is enclosed beneath a Gothic canopy enriched with foliage and architectural detail.
The outer lights consist of intricate geometrical patterns incorporating medallions bearing the Christological monograms XPC and IHS, affirming the divine identity of Christ through traditional abbreviations of his name. The decorative scheme balances symbolic clarity with ornamental richness.
In the tracery lights above appear grisaille quatrefoils and a Star of David, reinforcing the Old Testament heritage from which Christian symbolism emerges. The interplay of figure and pattern creates a harmonious Victorian composition, characteristic of Jones & Willis’ early work: doctrinally direct, visually ordered, and integrated within a Gothic Revival architectural framework.
