Tree of Jesse

This late 13th century window, above the choir at Tours cathedral. The 18 panels in the main part of the window depict the Tree of Jesse running up the center of the window, and the childhood of Christ on either side. The panels in the tracery contain representations of Abraham and Isaac, and an Angel with a Lamb stopping the sacrifice of Isaac.

The main part of the window consists of six registers each with three panels. The bottom three panels contain donor images, the central panel depicting Furriers and Drapers. Above these the three panels depict Jesse and on either side the Annunciation to the Virgin, and the Visitation. Above these panels the central figure is that of a King of Judea. The next register again has a central figure of a king, with the Magi and Herod, and the Magi travelling on to Bethlehem. Above these images the central figure is of the Virgin Mary, with the Magi and Simeon in the other two panels. At the top of the main window the central figure is of Christ with the Massacre of the Innocents and the Flight into Egypt to the left and right.
