The Stratiomyidae are a family of flies that contains some 450 genera and 1,500 species that are commonly called the 'soldier flies'. The larvae are scavengers and carnivores living in rotting vegetation or dung. The adult flies often have a bright metallic colour, they are slow to move and can often been found sunning themselves on leaves or herbs.
