This carved alabaster monument of Bishop John Stanbury contains his effigy and has saints and angels as mourners carrying shields around all sides. Unfortunately the heads of the figures were chipped off during the reformation.
John Stanbury was bishop of Bangor from 1448–1453, and then bishop of Hereford from 1453 until his death in 1474. During the Wars of the Roses he supported the Lancastrian faction, and was captured at the Battle of Northampton 1460, and held prisoner in Warwick Castle. He died in Ludlow at the Carmalite house on the 11th of May 1474.1
