Annunciation and Madonna and Child - Abthorpe Northamptonshire

This two-light stained-glass window of 1959, signed by J. Hardman Studios, is located in the church at Abthorpe. The window presents paired Marian subjects: the Annunciation and the Virgin and Child, unified by scriptural inscription and symbolic tracery.

In the left-hand light, the Annunciation is depicted. The Virgin Mary bows in humility as she receives the angelic message, accompanied by the inscription: “Hail Thou that art highly favoured” (Luke 1:28). The composition emphasises stillness and receptivity, set against a patterned field of cool blues that enhance the contemplative tone of the scene.

The right-hand light shows the Virgin and Child, Mary standing and holding the Christ Child, with the text: “Blessed art Thou among women” (Luke 1:42). The pairing of annunciation and fulfilled maternity creates a theological progression from promise to incarnation.

In the tracery light above appears a radiant dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit. Its placement above both scenes reinforces the role of the Spirit in the mystery of the Incarnation.

Executed in the mid-twentieth century, the window reflects the continued legacy of the Hardman tradition, combining clarity of figure, luminous colour, and structured Gothic framing with a simplified post-war sensibility.
