Scathophagidae is a small family which are often known as "Dung-flies" although only a few species of the genus Scathophaga, actual spend their larval stage in animal dung.


There are about 500 described species in 66 genera mostly distributed within the northern hemisphere. 54 species are recorded in the UK.
