Pope Adrian IV dies 1159

Pope Adrian IV died in Anagni on the 1st of September 1159. His papacy was marked by the Alliance in 1155 with the Byzantine Emperor Manuel Comnenus, to rid Sicily of the Normans, and his urging of King Henery II of England to invade Ireland and bring the Celtic church under the rule of Rome. He was succeeded by Pope Alexander III.
