Having left Lisieux on about the 3rd of August Edward III marched towards the Seine arriving at Elbeuf on the 7th of August 1346. Philip VI of France had ordered that the bridges across the Seine were to be broken to halt the English armies advance.

Whilst the English surveyed the broken bridge at Elbeuf and outriders set fire to the suberbs of Rouen on the south bank of the Seine, the Pope's two negotiators attempted to reach a settlement between Edward and Philip. Philip offered Edward Aquitaine and Ponthieu as fiefs of France, but Edward rejected this proposal wanting the lands in his own right.

The English army left Elbeuf and marched along the Seine towards Poissy looking for a crossing point.
