Fortitude Theme Pages

Fortitude is one of the four cardinal virtues of the Ancient World. She symbolizes courage, strength, and endurance. Often portrayed with a column, lionskin, or club of Hercules.

Part of the base of the tomb of the cardinals of Amboise in Rouen Cathedral this figure of Fortitude was sculpted between 1515 and 1525 by Roullant Le Roux.

The carved wooden panel representing Fortitude, with arm resting on a pillar, can be found as part of the reredos in the church of St Lawrence Shotteswell, Warwickshire. The reredos is constructed of a number of wooden 17th century Flemish panels.
