Once the smallest historic county in England, Rutland is now a non-metropolitan district council. However, it retains separate Lieutenancy and shrievalty as well the council has control of county functions such as education and social services. Many of the older buildings are built from ironstone or limestone and the area sits predominately on rocks from the lower to middle jurassic period (199 - 161 million years ago).
