East Window - Upper Boddington, Northamptonshire

A richly coloured Crucifixion window of 1868–1869 by Heaton, Butler and Bayne, presenting the central mystery of the Passion within a balanced devotional scheme.
-
Left-hand light:
The Virgin Mary ⓘ stands with Mary Cleophas, their restrained grief expressed through gesture and posture, forming a quiet counterpoint to the drama of the central scene. -
Centre light:
Christ crucified, with Mary Magdalene ⓘ kneeling at the foot of the Cross. Above Christ’s head is the inscription “It is finished”, emphasising the completion of the redemptive act. -
Right-hand light:
St John the Evangelist ⓘ and Joseph of Arimathea, witnesses to the Crucifixion and figures closely associated with Christ’s death and burial. -
Tracery:
Stylised floral motifs frame a central roundel bearing the IHS monogram, reinforcing the Christological focus of the window.
The composition is characteristic of Heaton, Butler & Bayne’s confident mid-Victorian manner: clear narrative organisation, strong linear drawing, and a harmonious palette that combines jewel-like colour with architectural framing, directing attention firmly toward the sacrificial figure of Christ at the centre.
