Epiphany Stained Glass - Bourges Cathedral
Submitted by walwynThis window depicts the Adoration of the Magi, one of the finest examples of early Renaissance glass painting in Bourges Cathedral. Set within a richly architectural framework of pinnacles, canopies, and tracery rendered in silver stain, the composition unfolds across four lights. On the far right, the Virgin and Child are shown within a modest stable, attended by Joseph. The three Magi, rendered as kings of distinct ages, approach from the left bearing their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
The central figures are modelled with particular attention to volume and gesture: the youngest Magus kneels to present his gift, while the eldest, in a heavy red robe and fur-lined mantle, inclines his head in reverence. Behind them, attendant figures and elaborate draperies fill the scene with movement and depth. The architectural canopy above, with its gilded vaulting and crocketed pinnacles, exemplifies the Late Gothic Flamboyant style, while the naturalism of the figures anticipates French Renaissance classicism.
