The Limoniidae are a very large family of flies that are closely related to the crane flies (Tipulidae).

Muscidae

The Muscidae are a large and familiar family of true flies, commonly known as house flies and stable flies. They are found worldwide, with many species living close to humans and animals.

The Psilidae are a small family of flies in the order Diptera, commonly known as rust flies. This group contains around 4 genera and 38 species worldwide, with several found in the UK and Europe. Rust flies are small, slender flies, usually yellowish or orange-brown in colour, which gives them their “rusty” appearance.

Rhagionidae

Snipe flies are a small family of flies containing 21 genera. These are medium–sized or large flies with slender bodies and stilt–like legs.

Sarcophagidae

The Sarcophagidae are know as flesh flies, as some species lay their eggs in the open wounds of other animals. However, most of the species lay their eggs in carrion. dung, or decaying material.

Scathophagidae

A small family which are often known as "Dung-flies" although only a few species of the genus Scathophaga, actual spend their larval stage in animal dung.

Stratiomyidae

The Stratiomyidae are a family of flies that contains some 450 genera and 1,500 species that are commonly called the 'soldier flies'.

Syrphidae

Flies in the family Syrphidae. They are often seen hovering or sipping nectar at flowers; the adults of many species feed mainly on nectar and pollen, while the larvae eat a wide range of foods.
