The western facade of the cathedral of Notre-Dame in Amiens contains 3 doorways. A central portal that opens into the nave, and two portals beneath the north and south towers that open into the cathedral's aisles. Above each portal is a tympanum the central one depicting the last Judgement, the northern one the transfer of the relics of St Firmin, and the south portal depicts the Virgin Mary.
The tympanum of St Stephen at Bourges cathedral was constructed by 1240, and is above one of the five portals at the west end of the cathedral. The tympanum is made up of three sections. The lowest section depicts Stephen being made one of the seven deacons of the early church. Above that is his martyrdom, and on top of all is an image of Christ as Salvator Mundi.
Robert Fitzhamon, also known as fitzHamio, (d1107) was the founder of Tewkesbury Abbey in 1102. He had been given the manor of Tewkesbury as a reward for supporting William II as king of England during the Rebellion of 1088. He also fought alongside Henry I against Henry's brother Robert Curthose. His great granddaughter Isabel of Gloucester became the first wife of John of England.
Construction of Bourges cathedral began in 1195 and was finally completed and dedicated to St Stephen in 1324. With its five portals the western façade, which was completed in 1230, is the widest of any Gothic church spanning some 40 metres.
The Cathedral of St Stephen, Bourges contains a large number of medieval and renaissance stained glass. The glass panels date from 1210 - 1620 and represents Saints, Apostles, Prophets, and Bible stories.
The above rose window in the west of the church was built in the last part of 14th century.
Monument by Nicolas Blasset, dedicated to canon Guilain Lucas. This monument contains the Weeping Angel with one hand and elbow resting on a skull that became a popular postcard during WWI.
Monument of Adrien Hénencourt (d1530) at Amiens Cathedral. This monument is below the choir screen (1490-1530) depicting the life of St Firmin that canon Hénencourt was responsible for commissioning.
These stained glass windows in the clerestory of Quire at Gloucester Cathedral were made by Clayton and Bell in the early second half of the 19th century. The original medieval clerestory glass had been transferred to fill in damaged panels in other windows in the cathedral notably the great east window and the window in the Lady Chapel.
The east window at Gloucester Cathedral was created as part of the rebuilding of the abbey church of St Peter. Built in the Perpendicular style it was the largest window in Europe. The decorative scheme portrays the Coronation of the Virgin and the glass mostly dates from the 1350s.
This 1860 window by Clayton & Bell depicts the coronation of Henry III in St Peter's Abbey (later cathedral), Gloucester, on the 28th of October 1216. A second coronation was performed at Westminster Abbey on 7th May 1220, Westminster Abbey, because Pope Honorius III did not consider that the first coronation had been conducted properly.
