Portal Last Judgement, gothic sculpture paris notre-dame

The central doorway (known as the Portal of the Last Judgement) was the last of the three portals, of Notre-Dame Cathedral Paris, to be decorated. Work started in about 1230 and consists of Christ in Majesty (showing the marks of the Crucifixion) with the Virgin Mary and St John on either side of him. Below the main scene is St. Michael weighing the souls of the resurrected dead. The redeemed being separated on the left, whilst demons are leading away the damned to the right. At the bottom the dead are rising from their graves whilst angels sound trumpets.
