Beauvais - France

Some of the 16th century and earlier stained glass that can be found in Beauvais France. In particular the works of the le Prince family in Beauvais Cathedral and the parish church of St Ettiene.
 

Birth of the Virgin Mary and Childhood


 
The first sequence of sculpture around the choir screen, starting at the western end of the south ambulatory, is the work of Jehan Soulas from 1519-1521. Sculpted from the hard limestone from the Tonnerre quarry, they consist of scenes from the Gospel of James, depicting the annunciation of the Virgin Mary to Joachim and St Anne, the birth of Mary, and the presentation of Mary in the temple.

Black Madonna - Chartres Cathedral


 
This Madonna and child was commissioned in 1508 as a black wooden copy of the 13th century silver Madonna that stood on the main altar at Chartres Cathedral. It was later given to the Cathedral in 1540.
 
 

Blue Virgin


 
 
Set into a 13th century window this image of the Virgin and Child (c1150) is made up of four panels. The blue halo and clothing of Mary are set against a red background.

Brigitte Simon-Marq


 
 
Bigitte Simon (1926) first worked with her father Jacques Simon, before working in Paris where she met and married Charles Marq. By 1957 Bigette and Charles had taken over the company and collaborated with contemporary artists, including Marc Chagall, to create works for religious buildings.
 

Canons of Loches


 
This window, at Tours cathedral, is dated to the last part of the 13th century, was donated to Tours Cathedral by the Canons of the Collegiate church at Loches in commemoration for the Treaty of Paris (1259) between Louis IX of France and Henry III of England.
