Pope Pius V dies 1572

Pope Pius V dies in Rome on the 1st of May 1572. He is followed by Pope Gregory XIII.

During his papacy he created the Holy League to fight against Ottoman incursions into Europe. He excommunicated Elizabeth I of England, and opposed the Huguenots in France, dismissing cardinal Odet de Coligny who fled to England.

He was canonized as a saint by Pope Clement XI in 1712.
