Pope Benedict I died in Rome on the 30th of July 579, and was succeeded by Pope Pelagius II. Benedict is said to have ordained fifteen priests and twenty-one bishops and consecrated three deacons, however no names have been recorded of those ordained or consecrated.1

Benedict's Papacy coincided with an invasion from Lombardy, which caused famine in Rome. He died during the siege and was buried the sacristy of the old Basilica of St. Peter.

His one recorded act was the grant of land (Massa Veneris) to Abbot Stephen of St. Mark's "near the walls of Spoleto".2
