Papacy of Pope Gregory IX begins 1227

On the 19th of March 1227, Ugolino di Conti, nephew of Pope Innocent III, is elected Pope Gregory IX, following the death of Pope Honorius III.

One of his first acts is to suspend and then excommunicate the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II because he had not started the Sixth Crusade as he had promised.
